Furnace: a central system used for heating. The unit uses natural gas, electricity or propane to heat the air in a building.
Geothermal Heat Pump: (ground source heat pump) a central heating and/or cooling system that transfers heat to or from the earth. The system uses the ground as a heat source (in the cold months) and a heat sink (in the warmer months). This unit is able to boost efficiency and reduce operating costs of the home heating and cooling systems.
Heat Pump: a central heating and/or cooling system that transfers heat from one area to another. Heat pumps have the ability to move thermal energy from one environment to another, and in either direction. This allows the heat pump to effectively bring thermal energy into an occupied space, or to take it out. In practice, this is always done in the opposite direction of a temperature gradient. A heat pump works in the same manner as an ordinary air conditioner (A/C), which itself is a type of heat pump. In the warming mode for a space, a heat pump effectively reverses a refrigeration unit so that the warm radiator is inside the space, rather than outside.
Mini-Splits: a cooling and/or heating system that is ductless and is usually designed to condition one room. Mini splits are also available with multiple indoor units combined with one outdoor heat pump. Works well in places where duct can’t be run due to limited space.
